Fourth Trimester Update ~

I’m in what they call the fourth trimester. So I wanted to share with you what my experience has been like. Once you’re sent home from the hospital you are on your own to figure out all the things. I was really excited to get home & learn the routine with a newborn. It wasn’t really intimidating for me personally since growing up with a special needs Brother my family & I were always going to his schedule. Daniel really prepared me in a lot of ways to be a Mother & for that I’m grateful for!

Bleeding… A lot of Mom’s get those adult mesh underwear or diapers. I guess it depends on how much you’re bleeding. But for me I didn’t need the extra security of a diaper. So I opted for a giant pad! Over the next couple of weeks my bleeding slowed down & I ended up just using panty liners towards the end. The bleeding part really wasn’t that bad for me. Thankfully!

Breastfeeding… Once the baby is born they want you to not only do skin to skin but they will usually want you to start nursing asap! At the time you’re only producing colostrum, which is the first form of milk you produce. It’s also known as liquid gold because it has so many benefits! The first 2-3 days in the hospital my nipples were sore & raw feeling. My first thoughts were this is going to suck! They did give me nipple cream but luckily I never needed it! Something I would recommend looking into is Silverette Nipple Covers – I truly believe they have saved my nipples! I got no cracking, bleeding, or soreness. Why are these cups so amazing? Well silver is a natural antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial metal that also contains anti-inflammatory agents. It heals and prevents cuts, wounds, cracks, soreness, and infections. They seriously do a great job at protecting your nipples! Besides your nipple health. I personally found that I had to get over a breastfeeding / pumping hump. In the beginning I was so sick of having my nipples being sucked on! I don’t know why but even when I would pump to get my supply up, I would literally cringe at the feeling. It took me roughly 2-3 weeks to officially get used to breast feeding and now it’s something that I enjoy. For the most part anyway. Dawson is 3 months ( Feb. 9 / 2021 ) and our current schedule is breastfeeding for the whole day and two formula feeds at night. One just before he goes to sleep anywhere from 8:30pm – 10pm & the other in early morning anywhere from 3:30am -5:00am. My Husband feeds Dawson while I pump! It’s work well for us. I found that by pumping at night it helped if I need to take a nap during the day. That way my Husband can feed him while I rest. I’m at the point now where I don’t always need to have a nap so I’ve been freezing the boobie milk that I pump at night.

Now Dawson is 4 months and I currently boobie feed him all the time minus one formula feed just before bed. He is sleeping well throughout the night. Usually only waking up once to be fed. Some nights he sleeps from 8-9pm to 5-6am. It honestly all depends.

Update – Technically we are way past the fourth trimester. As I’m writing this update Dawson is 7 Months old. WOW. Where did the time go? He is now eating two meals a day & I’m still breastfeeding / implementing one formula feed before bed. Lately he’s been up more during the night. Nothing that’s unmanageable but not the old usual of once a night. We sleep trained him for his naps so now he can fall asleep on his own in the crib with minimal crying. Still not always perfectly & he does still get upset sometimes but we are sticking with it. I’m hoping to work on the night schedule so maybe we can get to the point of him sleeping through the night or not needing the boob to fall back asleep. We will get there! Motherhood / Parenthood is a never ending battle between finally figuring something out & having it change again!

Another Update – Dawson will be 8 Months old tomorrow! I know this fourth trimester blog post is up a little late. Over the past couple weeks I’ve been working behind the scenes on my blog to be able to consistently get blog posts up for you! Once every Thursday!
